Train Hard : In all weathers

10 Feb

Sunday morning, rain is pouring

Training session in the rain. Not the most fun, I’ll be honest. But if you have the right kit, its never as bad as it seems!

My waterproof jacket has to be one of the best purchases since rowing – I got it from SportsPursuit, and its primarily a windproof running jacket from Odlo, so its cut quite nicely for freedom of movement and has vents around the arms for ventilation – as we all know waterproofs can get pretty hot and sweaty without ventilation! It’s also incredibly lightweight material, plus its white and reflective so perfect for evening outings and runs, without being garish like the usual dayglo sportswear!
The only negative is that its not as tight fitting as I need for rowing really. Due to the elasticated waistband for running, it tends to bunch up around my waist when bent over in the boat, so as I take a stroke and stretch back I often find my hands close to being caught up around my waist.

We had two outings today, both long and intense.

And to add to the excitement, due to the direction of the tide we left the club to the right, and went down to Battersea instead of always heading up towards Hammersmith.

The main drill of today was to emphasise strong backs – no early opening of the back.

Ted took us on the ergs for a quick reminder of the lifting-bum-off-seat exercise, before heading out for our outing.

The second outing was more of the legs only work, and Andy explained the importance of this. My backs not a huge fan of that, but it’ll just have to get used to it!
